Recently made the switch to an EV? Struggling to seek out a daily charging spot or constantly affected by range anxiety?

Around 40% of households can’t charge at home because they don’t have off-street parking or they rent. This lack of accessibility leaves people with one option: public charging, which is both inconvenient and expensive.

Brit company ZipCharge has unveiled a new product at COP26 that aims to solve that, can be wheeled around like a briefcase.

Called the Go, the charger is essentially A battery on wheels, one which will give an EV up to 40 miles of range. that is designed for simplicity, affordability and appeal.

In fact, very similar to a rolling suitcase, the ZipCharge Go has wheels for straightforward transport and may be charged from any electrical socket, then wheeled to your EV using the retractable handle where you plug it into the charge port employing a standard Type 2 cable.

The Go is compact, weighs about 50-lbs. It has a 4 kWh (net capacity) battery and can charge an EV at 7.2 kW. However, larger versions also will be introduced, offering up to eight kWh of net capacity.

The Go provides up to 20-40 miles of range (depending on the capacity and vehicle) – sufficient for everyday needs and enough for the typical commute.

You may not be able to drive cross country with that, but you’ll certainly be able to tackle your daily commute.

In a little more than 30 minutes, the 4 kWh version can add approximately 12 to 20 miles of range, depending on how efficient the EV is. The larger 8 kWh unit needs about an hour to completely discharge and can add roughly 25 to 40 miles of golf range.

Although range anxiety is now less of a problem, it still prevents those on the fence from making the leap.

A company called Gogoro has developed heat-swappable battery technology for use in motorcycles to solve this problem, but the batteries in electric vehicles usually cannot be replaced.

SparkCharge has a portable EV charging system called Roadie, but it is not as easy to carry as Go.

Unlike the SparCharge Roadie, the ZipCharge Go is targeted for consumer use and can be available for purchase (pricing hasn’t been announced) also as leased, with a starting lease price of £49 ($67 US) per month.

ZipCharge plans to start customer deliveries in Q4 2022.
